You can't expect to have a medical emergency away from home, or to have to cancel a trip due to an emergency but you can be prepared for these events.
We used to offer links to our suppliers so that clients could apply directly online without talking with us for which we were still paid a commission. We discovered that this process did not serve our clients as they seldom choose the best solution or company for their situation.
For example, one company has a 7 day precondition requirement for people under the age of 60 while the others are 90 and 180 days. This is huge if you have a medical issue after you purchase the policy but before you leave. Let us earn our commission by helping you make the right choice. There are many other differences that you would never know purchasing from a travel agent who is trained in travel or directly on line doing your own research.
We represent the leading companies in travel insurance and while there are similarities in what they offer there are also some significant differences in cost and coverages. You can also go directly to some of these companies and purchase from them but why would you do that if you can get our advice and help if you have a claim at no additional cost to you? Here are some comments on each company – they are different and we do earn the commissions by helping you get the best value.
Manulife Financial is one of the leading companies in providing travel insurance and is the best known. Our experience is that it is not the best choice if you have any significant medical conditions, otherwise it is a good choice
GMSalso offers a unique travel insurance plan for Canadian "Snowbirds”. "Snowbirds” is often used to refer to Canadians traveling to warmer climates during our winters. The Insuresnowbird travel insurance was designed specifically for individuals who have some past minor health challenges. They can also be a good choice for people going for shorter periods with some medical issues. More recently, it has become a little more complex to apply for.
This company offers similar coverage for less cost than Manulife but is less well known. The price difference can be substantial at times. They discourage people with high blood pressure or diabetes from applying with them.
We use this plan for Canadians who are out of the country and find they want travel insurance coverage either because the forgot to get it in the first place or their plan ran out. It does cost a bit more and the application is not the simplest but if you need it at least we can offer it.
This company offers a plan for people over 79 right up into their 90's
It is also worth considering if you are not travelling to the USA as they offer excellent pricing for those situations with up to a five day window in the USA that is covered for passing through the USA on your way to and from your destination.
Their specialty is for Canadians working abroad for longer periods where the company is paying the cost – usually six to twelve months.
They also offer coverage for people coming into Canada to work where again the company is paying the costs although it could be paid individually if they wanted.
These plans offer a much more comprehensive plan than traditional travel insurance – more like a group medical plan but limited.
